Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or place entered in a search tool is sent directly to the outside provider operating that tool. The provider processes the query and supplies its response. We do not retain or record those search terms on our systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
An email may be retained as needed to answer it. We keep messages within our organization unless disclosure is required by law.
Data We Gather Automatically
When a page loads, servers may collect basic technical and usage details:
- The IP address assigned to your device
- Which browser you are using and its version
- Your device type and operating system
- The pages you visited and how long you stayed on each
- The site that sent you here, if any
- Timestamps for each page view
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small files placed on a device. They help measure which pages are used and where visits end. Analytics providers combine that traffic data for reporting. A browser can block cookies, although some site functions may then work differently.
What We Do With This Data
- Operating the site and maintaining its performance
- Routing search requests to the selected outside provider
- Measuring page use and improving useful content
- Diagnosing errors and other technical problems
- Displaying advertising that may reflect visitor interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
La Crosse County Criminal History does not keep, assemble, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It provides general directions to records held by the sheriff, court clerks, Wisconsin Department of Justice Crime Information Bureau, and Wisconsin Public Sex Offender Registry. We are not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Visitor data is not compiled into consumer reports or third-party criminal profiles.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies operate the search boxes. Information submitted to one of those tools is governed by that company's privacy policy. Each partner controls its own retention and sharing rules, so review those terms before sending a query.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to sheriff pages, court portals, Wisconsin agencies, legal resources, or outside search services. Once a visitor leaves this site, the destination's privacy rules apply. Check them before providing personal data.
Advertising providers may use their own systems to measure activity across websites and select ads.
Who Might See Your Data
We do not sell personal information. Limited data may be available to:
- Search partners that handle queries you run on our site
- Analytics services we use to track traffic and performance
- Ad networks that place ads on our pages
- Law enforcement or government bodies when a valid legal order requires it
How We Protect Your Data
Reasonable security measures protect collected data, but no internet system can guarantee perfect security. A breach can still occur despite those safeguards.
Users Under 18
This resource is intended for adults, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If such data is identified, it will be removed.
Your Data Rights
Applicable law may provide additional control over personal data. Wisconsin's Public Records Law access rule and confidentiality and exclusion rules govern records kept by public authorities. Wis. Stat. § 165.83 separately governs state criminal-history collection and dissemination. None of those laws turns this private site into a government records custodian or creates the choices below; as a matter of this policy, you may ask us to:
- Ask for a copy of what we have on file about you
- Have us fix information that is wrong
- Request that we erase your data
- Opt out of certain kinds of data processing
Updates to This Policy
This policy may be revised. A new version becomes available here with its updated effective date.
